Classical Music Mode

Has the Classical Music Mode Feature request thread been erased? I do not find it here anymore, but it was active and had many comments... Is it a sign it is almost ready (announced in 2021) or on the contrary canceled?

Please add Conductor role for Artists so I can browse or search by Conductor for classical music

A small but significant step towards better management of classical music would be allowing the grouping of tracks into movements as implemented in some Qobuz albums for example. This would allow for the selection of a full work in playlists or smart mixes

Merged with: Allow the grouping of tracks (movements) into works

Since the idea of a Classical Music Mode incorporates quite a few different strands of ideas and requirements, i may merge some of the disparate requests/themes/ideas into broader topics such as this one to try and centralise some of the discussions, and also keep the number of feature requests at a sensible level

This is very curious - I am not sure where that request went, certainly I have no recollection of deleting or removing it! So have re-published this request - I will check again but apologies if i perhaps merged it with another Classical-related request (which i don't believe i did)

This would also be helpful for non-classical albums, esp. multi-disc albums to add original album title or subtitle.
Examples are Lou Reed - RCA album collection (17cd)), Kate Bush - Aerial: A Sea of Honey/A Sky of Honey), Peter Gabriel - i/o (bright side mix/ dark side mix), Daniel Lanois - Omni Series (steel / purple / santiago), David Sylvian - Weatherbox (5 CDs), all the CDs which split titles of a suite e.g. Egberto Gismonti - Saodações and all the great ECM Boxes of the „Old and new masters“ series.
In few cases Qobuz uses the tag ‚work‘ or ‚subtitle’ to manage this (e.g. Lou Reed - The RCA Album Collection). Unfortunately this it is not supported by innuos sense.
I would also appreciate to have this feature as a field in the assisted rip mode, which I solely use.

Partially related to an old request I made.. that I'm still holiday out for :-)

A particularly useful feature of Qobuz is that when an album contains several multi-movement works (symphonies, chamber music, etc.) the movements of each work are grouped together. Each work can then be played separately with a single touch. It would be great if there was a way to organize locally stored albums that way.

JLT1947 and guardajoias both suggest clever ways of using the existing tags to make their searches work with the existing structure. This is bad design - they are doing the work that the search engine should be doing for them. I don't want to have to remember my clever format - which may be different from what I use with Audirvana when I'm traveling. I don't want to implement it only to figure out that I screwed up something else I want to do, etc. One reason why I wish you guys would get Idagio going is that their search engine largely works; not as good as Primephonic was, but not bad, and for casual listening ease of access often trumps the higher res I might have on a recording at home. I'm frustrated.

Also, with long classical album titles, long artist lists, etc, sometimes I can't remember exactly the right search terms. Boolean search, please!!

Hi. Any timeline for this? This was very useful in iPeng...

Hi, no timeline currently but the overall approach for Classical is still something we are assessing.
In terms of putting Conductors in amongst Artists, do you think that would be okay in the context of larger libraries? I am not sure if some albums may even have multiple Conductors associated with them, including Chorus Masters and so on. Quite likely the overall ARTISTS page on the app would need its own filter for Conductors to make it more manageable in larger libraries.

Hello Stephen
responding to your train of thoughts about classical Conductors:
1/ I've been happy all along with the way LMS handles them as Artists, and most frequently AlbumArtists, all the more since many worldclass soloists ALSO conduct orchestras nowadays ! .... (plus most chamber "ensembles" have a "leader" - the word conductor is NEVER used!- who also plays either the violin or harpsichord.....). Actually, in most commercial metadata tags, the conductor's name would be listed along with the name of the orchestra, plus the soloists if any. This setup is rather "transparent" and does away with a superfluous "Conductor" tag (which incidentally only appears in a very small minority of commercial album tags). In my own usage (decently large library of over 3000 albums and 5000 artists incl. conductors), when tagging Artists on a track, I list soloists first, then orchestra, and lastly conductor, so there's no doubt who the conductor is when I display the track data and see a bunch of (sometimes unfamiliar) names......
2/ multiple conductors: they would only appear in boxsets (i.e. anthologies), so the solution there is to treat them as Artists and not AlbumArtists.
3/ chorus masters, concertmasters, guest musicians (e.g. in chamber music groups), etc.... can be listed as individual artists as well - no issue there (the group itself is identified by its name -e.g. "Beaux-Arts Trio"- so if one wants to see ALL the musicians' names, one would have to refer to the booklet (if available for display).
Conclusion: Browse/Search by Conductor only possible/useful with a minority of works (full orchestral, opera) and full implementation of "Conductor" tag.

Hi again. I beg to disagree somewhat. The conductor role does exist in LMS and standard tags. Indeed, it is not always properly used in commercial releases, but I always edit the tags before importing the albums in Innuos. on LMS/iPeng, it was possible to browse by conductor, and this allowed me to find those conductors (and choirmasters, leaders etc, yes I included those as well as it was easy to figure their exact role from context) and what they had done in my library. For the very well known ones, a search would also work, but browsing conductors would allow me to find some whose name I did not necessarily remember by heart, seen what I had that they directed etc. Very useful. As for artists, you already have several roles (Artist, Composer etc) adding one role for Conductors would be easy and would not burden the interface. I very much miss this possibility that worked very well in LMS and iPeng...

M

guardajoias

As for multiple conductors (or choirmasters, leaders etc) I would just enter them all with a ; to separate them and each would appear in the list of conductors... Not a problem

M

guardajoias

Here you can see how you can add Browse by Conductor by just using the Conductor role in Artists... Combined with the selection of tags /genre for which Conductors are used, this becomes very easy and useful

This should be easy to implement as all it requires is adding the existing conductor role to the list of artists types that can be selected in Artist view...
